attendant who jumped out of the airplane and right down the chute. steven slater appeared in a new york city court just a few hours ago. he faces criminal charges after his apparent melt down on the plane that had just landed at new york's jfk airport. nbc's jeff rosin is live. jeff, what do we know happened in court here? >> reporter: tamron, a couple minutes ago we had a chance to ask the d.a. about the reports. it is confirmed in fact that the d.a. is prepared to reduce the charges or get rid of them entirely perhaps if steven slater successfully completes a treatment program. in court today slater agreed to be evaluated by a medical and mental health professional if that happens and if all those according to plan. slater could enter that program which could, according to the d.a., include anger management classes and alcohol and substance abuse treatment program. that would take a couple weeks for the evaluation. the d.a. said they are in negotiations to perhaps lower the charges from the seven years they faces in prison right now down to perhaps something as low as community service. al
